Colorado has no “first bite is free” rule. In other words, even if the dog that bit you had never bitten anyone before, the dog owner is still libale. In most cases, the owner of the dog that bit you will be covered by home owners insurance. That insurance will cover any damages that the dog bite casued. Colorado law allows dog bite vitims to recover damages for medical bills, scar revision surgery, lost wages, and pain and suffering, asa well as other damages in certain cases. For example, if there is evidence that the dog that bit you had bitten someone before, then punitive damages may be awarded.
